Going Gluten Free
About 2 years ago, going gluten free seemed to be a big thing. So many people were finding out they had celiac disease and the cure was to go gluten free. The problem was finding ways to live a normal life and eat gluten free. I talked to alot of people when I started putting gluten free items into the stores and they were overjoyed with the new selection of items available.
I’m excited to tell you that we are now bringing in a new line of gluten free breads, buns, donuts, and snacks. There is even a gluten free pizza crust! So, check out the stores in the next few weeks and if you don’t see it, ask one of our employees and they will point you in the right direction. http://www.ener-g.com/
Thanks to our customers, I hope to continue to bring you the items you are looking for. So, please let me know what else I can bring in for you. If you want it on your table, we want it on our shelves.

Earth Day Bags Update
Just a quick update on our project. So far, 2 schools in Michigan city and 2 schools in Laporte are participating. Also, the Laporte County Christian Homeschool Association (LPCCHA) is decorating bags.
There is still time for more schools to get involved so if you know anyone who would like to, let me know.
As I get the bags turned in, I’ll be posting pictures of some of them on this site, so check back and see if yours is here!

Deceptively Delicious
Last week, I talked about food as medicine. The next day, I left for a seminar. It was put on by one of our produce and organic food distributors. So, I bet you can guess what one of the things they talked about was. You guessed it! The benefits of fruits and vegetables to keep us healthy- and, how to get the nutrition we need every day by eating them.
During the seminar, they had us try different foods and then guess what the secret ingredient was. I found out later, the recipes were all from a book I’ve been wanting to buy- Deceptively Delicious by Jessica Seinfeld. ( http://www.deceptivelydelicious.com/site/ ) In it, there are recipes for everything you can think of. But, instead of using typical things, she finds ways to sneak the good stuff in there. Some of the things I tried were really good. I didn’t have a clue what the mystery ingredient was.
So, if you have trouble getting your kids to eat their veggies- or yourself for that matter- then this might be a good plan. Sweetening foods with a natural fruit is much healthier than loading up on lots of sugar. And, I find it difficult- next to impossible to eat enough fruits and vegetables every day. I know it may not be the season for your favorite fruit, but with the chance to buy things from all over, we can get fresh fruits and vegetables year round from some places.
After the show, they sent us home with fresh produce and it was amazing! I think it’s the perfect time to buy fresh produce. Everyone feels like winter is never going to end and what is a better pick me up than a reminder of spring? It really did wonders for my mood.

Eating Your Way to Better Health!
“An apple a day keeps the doctor away!”
I guess it’s nothing new. I’ve been hearing that for as long as I can remember. But, I think it’s all getting easier these days. It used to be that you had to just know what certain foods would do. Now, the food industry is making it easier for shoppers to get healthy and stay healthy by eating the right foods.
Over the next few weeks, I will be exploring some of the latest trends for eating our health troubles away. I’d love to hear your tried and true remedies, so feel free to leave me comments and let me know what works for you!
This week, we’ll start off with one I’ve been using for awhile because I know it works for me! The thought of it may not sound overly appetizing I know. But, it keeps me from having to take a pill every morning and that makes it appetizing enough for me!
It all started with Kefir, an enzyme rich food with healthy micro-organisms that help with digestion. This probiotic drink seemed to be a well kept secret. But, bring Dannon Activia to the scene and the secret was out! This great tasting yogurt was an instant hit. One a day is enough to regulate your digestive system. Now you have your choice of ways to get probiotics. Soon after Activia’s success, Dannon came out with a drinkable yogurt, Danactive.
I took the Activia challenge and, being the skeptic that I am, was pleasantly surprised to find that it was a tasty, convenient breakfast. And, I was able to get off my ulcer medication. (Now, I’m not recommending anyone do that without a doctor’s supervision, so check with your doctor if you are currently on something for your stomach or digestion!)
Lately, I’ve been seeing probiotic products (say that 10 times real fast) popping up all over the dairy department- cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream. So, thanks to food makers, we have choices that taste great and can help us stay healthy.
Want to find out more about probiotics or one of the products I mentioned? Here are the links to their sites. You can take the Activia challenge for yourself!
